Baglioni and workplace safety: reporting near misses
Baglioni and workplace safety: reporting near misses
Occupational health and safety protection is a fundamental duty of every company, regardless of its size or industry.
Occupational safety means the set of measures , measures, assessments, monitoring and actions, internal and external to the Company, necessary to ensure workers a work situation in which there is no risk of accidents/accidents.
Over time, occupational safety regulations have undergone various adjustments, with decrees of law gradually changing employers’ and workers’ approaches to the issue.
The current and most recent legislation is Legislative Decree 81/2008, enacted in April 2008 and also called the “Consolidated Occupational Safety Act.” This legislation completely replaces the previous Legislative Decree. 626/94 and the other measures of the past 50 years on occupational safety and health protection.
The single text on occupational health and safety consists of 13 titles and 52 annexes . The structure of each title follows the following basic criteria:
- Identification of responsible parties
- Description of management measures and technical adjustments needed to reduce work risks
- Specification of penalties for non-compliance
In addition, the information flow has been reorganized into four axes of intervention:
- General protection measures
- Risk assessment
- Health Surveillance
- RSPP and RLS
What Baglioni does for workplace safety
At Baglioni, occupational health and safety in order to reduce the risk of accidents/accidents is pursued through additional key actions:
- Awareness, involvement and communication
- Maintenance
First of all, we strongly believe that awareness is one of the key elements to ensure maximum security within the Company.
We therefore work to ensure that every worker knows the requirements of the Law, understands the consequences of actions taken or missed, learns to recognize hazards, and properly develops knowledge, skills and abilities.
We do this through safety days held every quarter and throughadequate and comprehensive training that educates on safety.
In addition, we attach great importance to constant communication with each worker and the continuous pursuit of co-participation and cooperation, always taking into account the opinions of workers, supervisors and their representatives.
We then work on more organized awareness, to determine roles, responsibilities, information and communication exchanges.
Another key issue is the maintenance of our machines.
Since they are self-made, certified and tested, we are the ones who know them best. This allows us to intervene in advance when and where we need to, to ensure the total efficiency and safety of each piece of machinery and guarantee the continued safety conditions of workers over time.
Finally, one of the most important aspects of workplace accident prevention is the management of so-called “Near Misses.”
Occupational safety: what are Near Misses
A near miss is defined as a work-related “near injury.”
This is any event, work-related, that could have caused an injury or health damage (occupational disease) and only by pure chance did not produce it: an event therefore that has in itself the potential to produce an injury.
Near misses are therefore a warning sign for the Company’s security system: if analyzed correctly, they provide valuable information about the presence of any problems or deficiencies.
Near Miss management involves a number of activities, including:
- Involvement, participation of all components of the enterprise
- Reporting the near miss
- Evaluation and analysis of the event
- Search for solutions to be applied in the immediate future
- Searching for definitive solutions
- Implementation of identified corrective and preventive actions
- Verification and periodic inspection
This allows the company to intervene and improve its safety system even toward possible injuries excluded from the legislative obligation (Legislative Decree 81/08), that is, those that do not lead to days off work.
Baglioni and the common platform for Near Miss reporting.
In Baglioni we devote great attention to the Near Misses.
That is, we go looking for all those events that could pose risks within our Company.
After that, we analyze them and take immediate action to resolve them as quickly as possible.
Our goal in the near future is to totally zero out the number of accidents and injuries .
To do this effectively, we chose to use a platform we developed in-house with Microsoft Power Automate, .
It allows workers, whenever they encounter a dangerous safety situation, to report the event directly to the platform via a QR Code located in each plant.
Power Automate sends the report to the relevant figures (Plant Manager and Safety Manager in the first place) who can intervene and correct the situation promptly.
In addition, both the report and the information collected during the investigation and intervention are stored in the cloud so that they are always findable and visible to everyone.
In this way, we are able to democratize information.
This means that each plant manager can analyze data from each plant and, based on that, plan improvement actions in their own.
Each piece of data is then automatically entered within a Power BI .
It is a business intelligence tool that goes into creating interactive charts and reports that allow us to always have a clear and timely picture of the situation.
Digitizing this system is an important achievement: for every Near Miss we identify and go to correct, we go to prevent an accident or injury that could happen later.
The importance of occupational safety issues
The ‘main objective of occupational health and safety legislation is:
- Reduce the risks of accidents and deaths at work
- Ensure the maximum well-being of those who work
- Improve the work environment and business climate
Ensuring safety at work also enables the development of a sense of belonging, efficiency and productivity within the company.
Not only that, it also leads to an increase in the company’s reputation in the eyes of employees, partners, suppliers and customers and a reduction in social costs for occupational injuries and illnesses.
Thus, it is clear that a proper policy oriented toward worker and workplace safety brings a definite positive return to the Company.
In our industry, occupational safety is an issue of paramount importance.
In fact, handling pressure vessels intended for compressed gases poses several health and safety risks to workers.
To prevent these risks, at Baglioni we have taken all the appropriate preventive measures in line with the obligations of the Occupational Safety Consolidation Act.
In addition, through appropriate preventive measures and ongoing training of our workers, we ensure a safe and secure working environment for all.
