Camillo: the corporate ESM in Baglioni

In the process toward digital growth under Industry 4.0, Baglioni has just taken an important step forward.

The Camillo project continues, integrating a Manufacturing Execution System ( MES) software to monitor, control, track and analyze our production process.

This is a key step in the corporate digitization journey that Baglioni has decided to undertake and is gradually pursuing.

Currently, the Camillo project is not yet online. The next step, scheduled for the end of 2023, is to make this new system 100 percent operational on a pilot plant in the Baglioni plant in Casalvolone , and then extend it to the entire production line.

What the new Baglioni MES consists of.

The name of the Software we adopted to optimize our productivity was born almost as a joke: “We didn’t want to call it MES, let’s call it by another name… Camillo!”

MES is actually a computer system that is used in industry: it is used to monitor and manage various production activities in real time, providing valuable data and information on the entire production chain. It allows real-time control of what production is doing and the progress of production batches.

Detection is not done automatically: it is employees who declare the start and end of production of a batch through a specific program, whereas previously this work was done manually.

In addition, to maximize competitiveness, we introduced an additional module for Quality Control into the Software, in accordance with the directive applicable to the tank.

Finally, to optimize logistics, we have also extended the Camillo project outside the MES by digitally managing shipments in order to achieve significant benefits in terms of simplification, savings and efficiency.

The advantages in adopting an enterprise MES

As we explained above, the Manufacturing Execution System (MES) is a software system that is responsible for managing and controlling any operation in a company’s production process in an automated and digitized way, including:

  • productionplanning
  • control of production activities
  • quality management
  • tracking and tracing
  • resourcemanagement
  • order control
  • Real-time data and information collection
  • Monitoring of production machines from a maintenance perspective
  • analysis and reporting of key production KPIs

Camillo is a “lightweight” MES, that is, it does not handle all the activities described above, it just does what the company really needs: it is a product customized to our needs.

The MES can be integrated with other present business systems, such as the production planning system (ERP) and machine control systems (PLCs), so as to optimize and automate the entire process and provide greater real-time visibility of production status.

In addition, this system also enables timely response to exceptional situations, allowing rapid correction in case of anomalies or problems: this goes a long way toward reducing the lead time to complete production runs and exponentially increasing flexibility.

Thus, MES plays a key role in improving the efficiency and quality of manufacturing operations, with important benefits for the Company:

  • reduction of manual errors
  • controlled and shared work progress
  • efficiency improvement
  • Optimization of resources and reduction of waste
  • cost reduction
  • quality improvement
  • guarantee of regulatory compliance

Thus, it is an innovative solution that enables companies to digitize their production and achieve the most efficient, controlled and quality-standard compliant internal processes.

Challenges for Baglioni in the implementation of corporate MES

For Baglioni, the Camillo project represents the first fundamental step toward the necessary and strongly desired corporate digitization .

Since this was a debut in the direction of the new Industry 4.0, it represented a major success for our reality, but also a very demanding challenge.

A challenge that primarily concerned the complexity of implementation at the technical level, but also the customization of functionality, which was necessary to achieve a 100% tailor-made solution, that is, one capable of concretely meeting the specific needs of our production.

Being able to convey the needs of industry and Baglioni to the programmers involved in the development of the Camillo project required a strategic approach and careful management of the development process.

All of this enabled us to overcome the difficulties and achieve an efficient and completely tailored system, which will be implemented in our production process by the end of the year.

Baglioni’s commitment to digitization and Industry 4.0

In an increasingly digitized and automatedIndustry 4.0, falling behind is no longer possible.

For this reason, Baglioni’s efforts are aimed at adopting new advanced, digital technologies and automated solutions to improve internal efficiency, productivity and flexibility as well as global competitiveness.

To do this best, we have adopted a strategy of phased planning toward change so as to integrate the most useful digital technologies into our production and business management processes and maximize the benefits of this transformation.
