Baglioni and the Politecnico di Torino in 2024: Classroom Lectures and Student Visits to the Company
Baglioni and the Politecnico di Torino in 2024: Classroom Lectures and Student Visits to the Company
On Monday, November 25, 2024, Engineer Flavia Tolla, Chief Engineering SPV and SPE Division, delivered a lecture at the Polytechnic University of Turin (Politecnico di Torino) for engineering students.
To complement this experience, on Friday, December 6, 2024, 30 students from Professor Andrea Mura’s class visited our Astra plant in Galliate, home to Baglioni’s Oil & Gas division.
These two pivotal events allowed these future professionals to deepen their understanding of pressure vessel design and manufacturing—first through theoretical learning and then through hands-on experience.
Baglioni’s Classroom Lecture at the Polytechnic University of Turin
The classroom lecture delivered on Monday, November 25, by Engineer Flavia Tolla focused on tanks, a field where the Baglioni Group is a global leader and a key industry partner.
The session began with a crucial introduction to international certifications for pressure vessels, including:
- ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers): The worldwide standard for manufacturers of equipment and pressure vessels. This standard covers critical factors such as design, materials, manufacturing, inspection, and testing, and is essential for selling products in over 140 countries.
- CRN (Canadian Registration Number): A regulatory requirement for pressure equipment to be used in Canada. It involves a unique and mandatory registration number for equipment that complies with requirements regarding design, materials, manufacturing, testing, and documentation.
- CINA (also known as “China Stamp” or “China Manufacture License”): A license that authorizes companies to manufacture and sell their products in China.
This introduction helped participants understand the complexity of regulations applicable to industrial tanks.
Furthermore, it served as a valuable opportunity for engineering students to appreciate that, while the product itself may appear straightforward, adherence to international directives and standards represents the most challenging aspect of the engineering process.
Among the key directives explained by Engineer Flavia Tolla, two were highlighted in particular:
- The Simple Pressure Vessel Directive (SPVD): In effect since 2016, this directive applies to the design, manufacture, and conformity of simple pressure vessels, ensuring their safety and harmonized use within the European Union.
- The Pressure Equipment Directive (PED): Effective from 2026, this directive regulates the design, manufacturing, and conformity of fixed pressure equipment with a maximum allowable pressure exceeding 0.5 bar.
The second part of the session focused on a practical exercise involving the actual design of a tank.
The students worked on a case study using data from a tank located in the Polytechnic’s labs, applying the knowledge they had gained to design a tank according to ASME VIII Div.1 standards.
The lecture concluded with a technical discussion that highlighted critical aspects, advantages, and differences between the ASME Stamp and PED, followed by a design analysis to demonstrate how customer requirements can lead to customized tank solutions that meet specific standards.
Polytechnic University Students Visit the Baglioni Plant in Galliate
As in 2023, this year also saw engineering students from the Polytechnic University of Turin visit one of our plants, benefiting from a valuable educational opportunity to get closer to the real dynamics of the manufacturing sector.
On Friday, December 6, the first-year Master’s engineering class, led by Professor Andrea Mura, was welcomed at the Astra Plant in Galliate, home to Baglioni’s Oil & Gas division.
The visit began with a brief introduction to our company, during which our history, values, mission, and commitment to production excellence were presented.
This was followed by a training session on workplace safety, conducted by Ivan Belianin, HSE Manager at Baglioni Group, covering topics such as personal protective equipment (PPE), video safety, RSPP preparation, safe behavior practices, and more.
Next, the students were divided into three groups for a guided tour of the plant.
During the tour, three thematic stations were organized to explore specific technical and production areas:
- Production and Stainless Steel Workshop: Guided by the Production Manager, the students explored the production department and, assisted by an engineer and a metalworker, analyzed technical drawings with a focus on defining roles and the importance of collaboration in project execution.
- Welding Techniques: The Welding Supervisor explained the main techniques used in the workshop. The students had the opportunity to witness a practical simulation of a manual welding test, gaining firsthand insights into the process.
- Non-Destructive Testing and Quality: Led by Giulio Pontiggia, the students delved into the topic of non-destructive testing (specifically the use of penetrant liquids for weld inspection). A practical demonstration highlighted how these tests ensure product compliance with required quality standards.
The day concluded with a lunch organized at the plant, allowing all participants to interact directly with Baglioni professionals and reflect on the knowledge they had gained.
The Long-Standing Collaboration Between Baglioni and the Polytechnic University of Turin
For several years now, Baglioni has actively collaborated with the Polytechnic University of Turin through speeches, classroom lectures, company visits, and participation in Career Days.
This synergy between the industrial and academic worlds is carried out regularly to deliver significant benefits in multiple directions.
Students gain access to a more comprehensive educational experience, establish an essential first point of contact with the professional world, and fully understand the rules, opportunities, and challenges of the industry.
The Polytechnic strengthens its network of relationships with leading Italian industrial players, building a direct bridge between students, graduates, and the job market.
Meanwhile, Baglioni benefits from discovering young talents and innovative ideas to bring into the company.
For all these reasons, the collaboration between Baglioni Spa and the Polytechnic University of Turin continues to grow, with the goal of shaping the engineering leaders of tomorrow.
