Production process optimization for tanks: interview with Michele Colli – Supply Chain Specialist Baglioni
Michele Colli is Supply Chain Specialist at Baglioni: having joined the company about 18 months ago, he holds the delicate task of supervising, analyzing and coordinating the various stages of the company’s processes to:
- Efficient collaboration between departments
- optimize production processes
- maximize results
- ensure optimal work
- minimize costs
In this interview with Michele Colli we delve into his career path, his role within Baglioni, and the solutions adopted to optimize processes in the Italian plants of the Baglioni Group.
How was the professional journey realized outside and inside Baglioni?
“After graduating in Accounting, I enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Eastern Piedmont University, and in the meantime, soon after I turned 18, I started working in various fields.
When I graduated with a degree in economics and business management. , I was hired as a production manager for a food company, with the role of Production manager assistant , where I stayed for about 15 months.
I then learned that in Baglioni they were looking for a person who was flexible and capable of working effectively on different issues, and recognizing myself in these characteristics, I proposed myself. I was hired and joined the company as supply chain specialist at the plant Astra Refrigerants in Novara, Italy, which specializes in the design and construction of pressure vessels for different fields of application and non-standard tanks to specific customer requirements .
During the first few months I was able to observe and study the workings of the different business processes: I initially interfaced with the warehouse workers, then with the engineers in the technical department, the purchasing department, the production managers, and finally with the sales and quality control department.
This gave me a way to have a complete overview of the company flow and to understand the workings of the processes, the different divisions and the many business dynamics, which I could not have done by operating in one office.
In addition, it was an excellent opportunity to better understand the small issues present at the management and system level and to find solutions that could solve them, which led the Company to be more competitive and efficient .
Thanks to this reality, my educational path has grown hand in hand with my professional one: in fact, Baglioni has offered me training and mentoring , enabling me to develop a stronger foundation to operate in an even more focused way.
In recent months I have been collaborating a lot with the technical department and the quality department, overseeing the process that leads from creation to the sale of the product and coordinating the different functions to make the collaboration between the various departments even more efficient.
At the same time, I am following a project for the Shanghai plant, with the goal of reconstructing the Company’s logic of operation and making it effective and optimized: what needs to be produced, bought and sold, timing, etc.”
What does process optimization in the Italian plants of the Baglioni Group consist of?
“In Italy, the Astra division is organized in five different production plants:
- Galliate plant , where the Oil & Gas Division , with production of shell and tube heat exchangers, air coolers, air chillers, etc.
- San Pietro Mosezzo Plant , which is engaged in the production of air-oil separators and small and medium-sized special tanks, and is the headquarters of the SPE division
- Casalvolone Plant , which operates in the construction of medium-sized tanks for the compressed air market.
- Plant in Corigliano D’Otranto (which we are converting back to SPE) that deals with the production of small and medium-sized tanks for various B2B-oriented application areas, mainly to manufacturers in the EMEA region.

- Plant in San Pietro Mosezzo , specializing in the production of special custom medium and large containers and tanks for high-pressure applications, as well as dealing with powder and liquid coating and assembly of components on tanks
These establishments tend to work as “watertight compartments,” i.e., as separate and autonomous . My main goal is to improve communication among everyone, always in consultation with the director of each Plant, so as to ensure a more productive work environment and further raise the level of corporate competitiveness.”
What role does internal training play in Baglioni?
“In Baglioni, I found a company that promotes young people and that concretely rewards those who want to do, and I have seen the investment that is made in people, having benefited firsthand.
The company philosophy aims to support employees in the development of their career, making available to them not only a dynamic and challenging work environment, but also creating, for each operational role (in the engineering office, quality office, and supporting plant managers), customized training programs to be carried out in the first months of work and courses and activities to improve their skills throughout their career.”
