The Sustainability Report 2022 in Baglioni

The Sustainability Report 2022 in Baglioni

For Baglioni, 2023 was a very important year in terms of commitment to the environmental sustainability and the reduction of its own impact on the Planet: in fact, it marks the date of the first Sustainability Report of all Group units referring to 2022 data, including the Chinese and American plants.
It therefore represents a fundamental step on the path we have taken to become a sustainable company and a formal and concrete commitment to achieving ever-improving economic, social and environmental results.

What the Sustainability Report consists of

The sustainability report is a report to be drawn up once a year (called CSRD, i.e., Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive), which went into effect in 2014 but became more stringent on January 1, 2023, through which companies communicate to stakeholders the impact of their actions so as to promote greater accountability.

Thus, it aims to bring Companies to account for their actions in the economic, environmental and social fields, so as to ensure total transparency and assess with the utmost accuracy the strategies being planned at the company level.

Specifically, there are 5 areas of reporting to be included in the sustainability report:

  • fight against active and passive corruption
  • environmental protection
  • social impact
  • human rights
  • staff

In addition, each Company must also report on its materiality, highlighting its management methods, risks, policies, performance and business model, so as to provide a specific and complete picture.

The sustainability report is now a mandatory document for:

  • Large public interest enterprises with more than 500 employees
  • Enterprises with more than 250 employees and a turnover of more than 40 million euros
  • Companies listed on regulated markets (except for microenterprises)

For SMEs, on the other hand, the sustainability report is optional and will remain so until 2028.

Sustainability report 2023: Baglioni’s numbers

First, we focused on Health, Safety and the necessary Training of all Group personnel, reducing the accident rate by 10 percent in 2022.
Further progress was made in 2023 through the large-scale implementation of the Near Miss Reporting which involved all of the Group’s Italian plants .

With a Value of Production on the rise in 2022 compared to 2021 by about the 11%, the energy intensity index, which is calculated as the ratio of energy consumption (GJ) to the value of production (M€), decreased compared to 2021. This means that despite the increase in the value of production, the Group has used energy more efficiently.

In addition, more attention has been paid to the aspect of waste produced daily in the company, where only about 20 tons is hazardous waste compared to more than 3,200 tons of non-hazardous waste.

Internally, we are continuing to develop new digital processes that improve the working conditions of our employees and contractors: too much paper not only slows down decision-making and operations but is an obvious obstacle to progress and environmental waste.

The digitization also has an important practical spin-off in terms of staff training and professional growth, as it allows new tools to be discovered, and our employees are constantly challenged to think about how to improve them.

With this Sustainability Report, therefore, we want to declare our commitment to transparent sustainability performance. It is only the first in a long series where we are going to track and publish our progress in ESG.

The importance of the Sustainability Report for Baglioni

At Baglioni, we chose to include sustainability reporting in our corporate policy first of all to align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.

Communicating what responsible and sustainable business behaviors we have adopted throughout the year allows us not only to concretely demonstrate our commitment to becoming asustainable company, but also to be able to implement strategies and actions toward new sustainable business models.

Through the sustainability report, we can also monitor our activities with greater depth and efficiency, so as to put into practice continuous performance improvement and reduction of inefficient operating costs and waste, benefiting sustainability and market competitiveness.

In addition, this report allows us to have a more effective management: That is, we can verify the social, environmental and governance elements that have a direct impact on business operations to motivate staff, attract new talent, create a positive work environment, and increase the chances of achieving bigger and bigger goals.

For us at Baglioni, the sustainability report is one of the key tools for advancing our path toward sustainable development in line with ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) principles, along with other internal strategies such as:

  • 100% recyclable products
  • focus on green markets (hydrogen)
  • technology development
  • better data management
  • Employee awareness and involvement on the issue
  • sustainable mobility

These initiatives, together with the first sustainability report, represent fundamental guiding tools for us at Baglioni to create value not only at the corporate level, but also for society and the surrounding environment.
